Project

Goals

  • To gain a deeper insight into the quality of outflows from institutions with greater use of pharmaceuticals, with special emphasis on qualitative and quantitative monitoring of the present pharmaceuticals and their metabolites.
  • To optimise and demonstrate a technology for the removal of persistent pollutants at the outflows from wastewater treatment plants to improve the water quality and protect the natural environment. An upgrade of individual components of the system like power control system and electrolytic cell and establishment of the working platform for on-line operation monitoring.
  • To develop and demonstrate a financially favourable technology with low operation and maintenance costs, which would be applicable to all nursing homes and hospitals, as well as to develop an efficient protocol for treatment of wastewaters containing hardly degradable compounds for all sorts of users.
  • To contribute to the list of best available technologies for the removal of persistent pollutants and comprehensive modular treatment solutions.
  • To contribute to the improvement of knowledge in the field of role of pharmaceuticals in wastewaters and therefore to the development of new standards and legislation in the field of micro-pollutants, so-called emerging pollutants and Substances of a Very High Concern (SVHC).

Activities

1. Preparatory actions comprehend:
• Wastewater sampling and analysis of major pharmaceuticals and physical-chemical parameters, which are          emerging in selected wastewaters.
• Optimisation of the removal of pharmaceuticals on the model laboratory scale.

2. Designing of a demonstration pilot plant and obtaining construction permissions.

3. Construction of the demonstration pilot plant with the water treatment capacity of 1-3 m3/day and its trial operation.

4. One year monitoring period:
• Mentoring of physical-chemical parameters and evaluation of outflow quality
• Performance optimisation
• Recording and transmission of the main physical-chemical data in real-time and their publication on the website

5. Communication and dissemination of the project results
• Presentation of the technology with education seminars on pharmaceuticals in the environment
• Participation on international conferences and fairs
• Publication of the results in media
